A Thoughtful Interview about Bespoke Home Organisation

We had a wonderful chat with Caroline Caron Dhaouadi, founder of Homefulness, who told us about the transformative power of decluttering and home organisation for mental well-being.

This interview delves into the benefits of decluttering, its impact on home offices and bedrooms, and offers valuable tips for starting the decluttering journey. Homefulness emphasises the connection between decluttering, visual serenity, reduced stress, and improved productivity, presenting a holistic approach to well-being.

Tell us a bit about yourself and the journey that led to the creation of Homefulness.

Bonjour! I’m Caroline Caron Dhaouadi, the founder of Homefulness, a luxury home organisation company in London. My 14-year consulting career led me across continents, settling in London nine years ago.

After pausing my previous career, investing in tech startups, I founded Homefulness. This venture blends my love for design with entrepreneurial spirit. I’m convinced that a better home, organised with style, is a huge component of wellbeing.

From an international career to embracing motherhood, I channel these experiences into my creative work, shaping Homefulness to redefine the art of creating a home, which I believe should be a sanctuary away from stress and clutter.

Through our experience and research we know that decluttering, which essentially reduces visual noise, has a significant positive impact on our clients’ mental health by calming their nervous system. How do you believe decluttering contributes to creating a more organised and stress-free living environment?

At Homefulness, we deeply understand the profound impact of decluttering on mental well-being. Decluttering, beyond its aesthetic benefits, plays a pivotal role in fostering an organised and stress-free living environment.

Decluttering brings visual serenity, eliminating ‘visual noise’ for focused living. A tidy space enhances mental clarity, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of order. Empowering through intentional choices, it creates a positive emotional connection, contributing to overall well-being. In bedrooms, decluttering promotes calming atmospheres for restful sleep, improving mental health. Encouraging mindful living, it heightens awareness of possessions and nurtures intentional lifestyles.

The home office is often the first area people consider when decluttering. Can you share your insights on how decluttering influences mental clarity and enhances the ability to focus?

Decluttering minimises distractions, promotes order, reduces stress, boosts productivity, sparks creativity, has positive psychological effects, and fosters balanced work-life integration.

In essence, our approach goes beyond aesthetics, creating functional and inspiring spaces for optimal mental clarity and overall satisfaction.

At Studio Mae, we’re passionate about designing bedrooms as sanctuaries. What connections have you observed between a clutter-free space and improved sleep quality and relaxation?

We have the same passion for organising bedrooms as sanctuaries! It lies in recognising the interconnectedness between a clutter-free space, improved sleep quality, and the promotion of relaxation. By curating intentional, personalised spaces, we aim to transform bedrooms into havens where our clients can rejuvenate and truly unwind.

A clutter-free bedroom minimises visual stimuli, contributing to stress reduction. Creating an environment free from chaotic visuals allows the mind to unwind, promoting relaxation essential for a restful sleep.

A clutter-free space also reduces cognitive load. When surrounded by order, the mind is free from the mental burden of sorting through visual chaos, allowing individuals to transition seamlessly into a state of relaxation conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Our approach involves incorporating mindful sleep rituals into the bedroom design. From carefully chosen decor to personalised storage solutions, these elements contribute to a holistic approach that encourages clients to embrace intentional bedtime routines.

Tailoring the bedroom design & organisation to reflect the client’s preferences creates a personalised oasis. This customisation fosters a deep sense of comfort and security, essential elements for relaxation and achieving a state of deep sleep.

Could you provide some valuable tips for individuals looking to embark on a decluttering journey?

Start with a small, specific area for quick wins, then gradually expand. Organise by category, not location, to assess belongings fully. Define clear decluttering goals and prioritise for focus. Consider storage costs and space impact before keeping items. Develop sustainable habits for ongoing clutter prevention, including regular purges and mindful consumption.

Remember, the goal is not just to remove items but to create a living space that aligns with your lifestyle and brings you joy and functionality. Happy decluttering!

For those seeking quick wins with decluttering, what are your go-to items or strategies to kickstart this process?

Here are some quick-win items and strategies to kickstart the decluttering process:

Start by donating or selling unworn clothes. Discard expired pantry and beauty items. Keep only essential and regularly used items, eliminating duplicates. Organise and recycle paper clutter. Dispose of unused electronics responsibly. Declutter surfaces for a visually clear space. Simplify decor for a sense of spaciousness. Streamline expired toiletries for an effective, clutter-free space.

Remember, the key is to focus on items that are relatively easy to assess and part with, providing you with quick wins and motivating you to continue the decluttering journey.
