The Power of Colour in Interior Design and How it Affects Wellbeing

WELLBEING ~Feeling sleepy today?

You’re not alone.

62% of adults don’t sleep well and 10% of the world population have insomnia.

Have you considered changing your surroundings?

Interior design plays a big part in sleep quality – and sleep quality plays a big part in your overall health. Your circadian rhythm is linked to your immune system, cardio health, digestion, hormones, cognition, weight control and coordination – just to name a few.

Here are a 6 super simple interior design tips for better sleep;

1. Curtains: Your biological clock needs you to block out light at night and wake with daylight. Invest in black-out blinds and make sure you open them immediately on waking.

2. Calm Colours: Go for warm tones on the walls in low VOC paint. Think about skin tones – from warm white to browns, or warmer tones of blues and greens to emulate water elements.

3. Circadian Lighting: During the day, avoid working in artificial light or under fluorescent lighting. Both disrupt your circadian cycle. Utilise natural light or circadian lighting.

4. Red light at night: At night, avoid blue light from phones, tablets and TVs and opt for red or amber light (beeswax candles, fireplaces, soft, dimmed lighting) instead. This calms the mind.

5. Sleep ‘soundly’: Introduce sound absorbing fabrics and textures for a womb-like feeling in the bedroom. Wake to a warm wool rug underfoot, organic linens, soft drapery and acoustic panels.

6. Visual noise: Reduce visual noise in your bedroom; it creates subconscious stress. Declutter and store unnecessary items away. Keep your surfaces clear and calm.

Your bedroom setup holds the keys to how well you sleep, and a few tweaks can make a world of difference. Imagine a cozy cocoon where distractions, mess, and bright colours are banished. Clear out unnecessary clutter, say goodbye to stress-inducing sights (looking at you, laundry), and let soft bedside lighting set the mood. Dim those harsh lights, introduce the warm glow of beeswax candles, and last but not least - It's time to give your phone a break too.
